4x10 was Stefan confirming what Elena has known since season 3. If Stefan can’t have Elena he will abandon her.  I’ve theorized that the reason Elena chose Stefan in 3x22 is because she knew Stefan would leave, he would take himself completely out of her life, if she didn’t choose him.  Elena is a girl who has lost so many people, she couldn’t bear to lose someone else.  That’s what’s really sad in this episode, Elena was crying because she already knew the ending of this story.  She wanted to be wrong, but Stefan confirmed that he would rather erase the memories of her than witness her happiness if it wasn’t with him. 

You know what the bright side of this is? The old Elena would have wallowed and blamed herself, but she didn’t. No, Elena Gilbert had a terrible day and told Damon the one good thing about.  Telling Damon that she loved him eclipsed all the bad that day, because that love is the most real thing she’s ever felt and it outweighed the bad.
